In the current business community, building a great company now stretches well beyond the conventional metrics used to measure the success of public and private organizations. The infusion of Millennials into the workplace has fueled a resurgence of emphasis placed on culture, community, and a connection between the typical corporate mantra and the employees who turn the wheels. Companies now want employees who are ‘vested’, ‘all-in’, and ‘productive’ and attempt to create environments that foster that type of feeling. Sometimes it’s forced, sometimes it comes naturally, and sometimes it’s a combination of both. Regardless of how you get there it always takes time, hard work, and a committed effort.

Maintaining a consistent culture within a company that has gone through the type of hiring spurts that DOMA has is no small task. Now with over 150 employees, building relationships between peers, staff, and colleagues within DOMA is an integral part of the overall success and continued growth of the company.

From Day 1 at DOMA Technologies, we have aspired to build a great company with culture as a central part of the fabric of our workplace. Over 20 years, that wish has been tested by a variety of different factors and the ebbs and flows that small businesses typically go through. We finally got to a point where we felt that we needed to dedicate more resources to culture as an important next step. This year DOMA Culture has been completely reinvented in a way that we believe will foster engagement, community, and employer pride.

With such a large (and growing!) team of employees the challenge of building a sustainable corporate culture cannot fall on just a few individuals within a single culture committee. In the past this approach has resulted in disorganized efforts and burn out. There is simply too much at stake to expect a small group to handle everything that comes with culture, especially when they still have their full-time responsibilities to handle. This year DOMA is taking a new approach by dividing culture into three teams, each with a focus on one important area of culture. These teams include DOMA Driven, DOMA Gives, and DOMA Ignite. By clarifying and delegating different aspects of culture these teams can focus on the defined goals of their committee day to day and pool resources to collaborate for larger opportunities when they arise. Each committee has a role to play in making DOMA one of the best places to work in Hampton Roads:

DOMA Driven

DOMA Driven’s tenents are encouraging employee recognition, amplifying company pride, and fostering personal growth. DOMA Driven exemplifies the corporate values of Innovation and Integrity. This committee’s members are champions of the DOMA brand who encourage and inspire personal growth in others. DOMA Driven manages the Employee of the Quarter and Impact awards as well as monthly celebrations and the creation of DOMA’s branded products.

DOMA Gives focuses on encouraging and sharing the spirit of kindness. By reaching out in the local community, DOMA seeks to make a lasting impact on lives right here in Hampton Roads to include the lives of our own DOMA family. DOMA Ignite

It's important to take time to recharge and have fun. DOMA Ignite focuses on creating fun initiatives around the office, team building, and event planning. Whether it’s our free breakfast initiative, new gaming stations, sports leagues, or food trucks you can be sure that if it inspires joy- DOMA Ignite is behind it. DOMA Ignite is about keeping the team motivated and building positive connections with others through fun.

The overarching goal of the newly restructured DOMA Culture team is to create opportunities for every employee to get involved and feel welcome. For community minded employees this means participating in DOMA Gives initiatives like the Eggleston OK 5K race or voting on the which select charities DOMA will support. For fun-lovers it may mean stepping up to complete one of our monthly activities cards or welcoming a new hire by challenging them to a friendly game of shuffleboard through DOMA Ignite. The ambitious often find a place with DOMA Driven and enjoy helping with monthly celebrations designed to honor those getting married, welcoming a child, graduating, or celebrating a birthday. There are so many ways to participate and the team works hard to offer both low and high time investment opportunities so that no matter their schedule anyone and everyone can get involved in an initiative that speaks to them.  

The new DOMA Culture committees were introduced this January and have since made some important strides in building the community at DOMA. Two stand out initiatives include:

Town Hall – With support from all the committees there is now a monthly, re-energized Town Hall that includes games, prizes, awards, and updates from across the company. Each committee takes part in making this event one that employees are genuinely excited about. Whether it’s a social media challenge with premium Brandfuel sponsored prizes, free Vision 2021 t-shirts, or a corporate dress policy summer fashion show there is always something new to look forward to.

The DOMA Store – A brand new in-house corporate store features a consistent inflow of new, branded products created with feedback from the employees. DOMA Driven partners with DOMA’s marketing team to make products people are excited to wear and use, DOMA Ignite manages giveaways and sales from the store, and DOMA Gives decides how to allocate the proceeds. 100% of the proceeds from the DOMA store are donated at the end of each year to support charitable causes meaning our employees can be wear their DOMA gear with pride.

Career and internship applications are at an all time high and we at DOMA believe our thriving culture is a big part of that growth. The atmosphere is heading in the right direction and Driven, Gives, and Ignite have big plans to keep the momentum going as DOMA pursues its vision for DOMA Culture.

In today’s highly connected world closing sales is a multi-faceted process that incorporates digital marketing, data analysis, geotargeting, and eye-catching visual design. Marketing has grown increasingly sophisticated and generating leads requires a deep understanding of marketing tools like Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Automated CRM software, and social media strategy.

As part of Vision 2021 DOMA Technologies is striving to double its sales in 3 years. For DOMA to keep pace with consistent revenue growth it is going to take a collaborative effort between marketing, communications, and sales unlike anything DOMA has executed before. Coordinating that effort is no easy task, and it is with these lofty goals in mind that DOMA is excited to welcome Anthony Malangone aboard as Chief Revenue Officer (CRO).

As Chief Revenue Office, Anthony will be playing a pivotal role in how DOMA manages its revenue streams. Under his guidance, DOMA’s sales and marketing/communications teams will be building a holistic strategy to increase sales and foster better customer engagement. A CRO helps to not only break down silos within the sales pipeline, but also to improve the customer experience. In many ways sales stagnation and customer experience are interlinked. In better serving the customer through targeted communications and more consistent follow up DOMA hopes to see sales increase in tandem with customer satisfaction.

Anthony joins DOMA with a breadth of experience that makes him aptly suited to fill the many roles of a CRO. He spent over 15 years working for Google as a Senior Account Executive, a Tech Industry Manager, and ultimately as Head of Industry for Business to Business (B2B) Technology. In his role as Head of Industry at Google he spent eight years generating sales, synchronizing marketing outreach, and building brand awareness for Google’s B2B technologies.

Selling services can often be more difficult than promoting a tangible product. Business process optimization is highly important, but difficult to capture and quantify for potential customers. Anthony’s analogous experience selling this category of services at Google has made the transition to DOMA an easy one. He has already demonstrated a deep understanding of the market challenges DOMA is facing and has come aboard ready with creative solutions and valuable insight.

Bringing on a CRO is a huge step for DOMA and speaks to our commitment to really deliver on our Vision 2021 targets for revenue, sales, and marketing/communications. We at DOMA firmly believe that with Anthony on the team those goals are more attainable than ever.

DOMA CEO Pat Feliciano was afforded the exciting opportunity to visit Google’s New York City headquarters this month. Google’s NYC campus is nestled just south of the West Village and occupies 1.7 million square feet. Google’s move to NYC heralds an east coast shift that is slowly gaining momentum with many silicone valley tech companies like Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Linkedin. Many of the tech giants taking part in this mass migration site untapped talent as major factor in their move. Indeed, Google alone plans to bring over 15,000 jobs to New York. Technology is rapidly outstripping law and finance as the East Coast’s major economic driver.

Google’s east coast campus takes great pains to appreciate and evoke the quirky vibe of the city it now calls home. Unexpected nods include subway grates in the hallways, fire hydrants, and focus rooms decorated to feel like authentic studio apartments. Different wings thematically evoke surrounding New York boroughs including the Meat Packing district and Chelsea. The eclectic interior design inspires engagement and collaboration.

Carefully planned spaces foster what Laura Gimpel, Google Regional Facilities Manager for the East Coast, calls “causal collision”. Causal collision is the chance interaction that occurs when unacquainted staffers meet. Google believes these chance meetings can foster cross pollination and innovation in unexpected ways. Ultimately, the campus is a social setting, that is meant to drive culture and keep the team motivated.

In addition to the facility tour Google provided a market analysis for DOMA where the Google team shared some of their insights on both how we could improve our corporate culture and how we could make strides in sales. One key inclusion was data on how promoting our Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions should be a major focus moving forward.

DOMA is entering a period of reflection and growth, as we expand it’s important to have mentorship and guidance. Industry leaders like Google can help provide a roadmap to success. As one of the only major technology companies in the area DOMA is leading the vanguard into the unknown for Hampton Roads. Over 20 years DOMA has asserted itself as a local model for success and therefore might be paving the way for other tech companies to put down roots in the area.

At DOMA we take our Vision 2021 values seriously. One of those values, “Build Up Leaders” really speaks to DOMA’s mission to give back to the community through educational programs. For four years DOMA has partnered with Virginia Beach’s very own Wave Leadership College to help equip the next generation of leaders.

Once known as the Life Leadership Training Center, Wave Leadership College (WLC) was launched with an initial class of six students in 1999. WLC has since grown to include an accredited Associates Program with six different degree tracks. Their newer Bachelor of Science program, supported by Southeastern University, boasts five majors including Ministerial Leadership, Business Administration, Digital Media, Psychology, and Mass Communications. Wave Leadership College has set itself apart by being both highly affordable and student focused. A small student to teacher ratio of 11 to 1 means that each student gets the hands-on guidance they need to reach the next level in their journey.  

It is DOMA’s goal to reach and inspire leaders both within the DOMA family and outside in the community. With that goal in mind, DOMA has provided both financial support and hardware donations in support of WLC’s mission. DOMA was recently invited to tour Wave Leadership College (WLC) and learn more about how our partnership has improved both operations through our DX software and the technology resources available to their students. In addition to a behind the scenes view of the facilities, DOMA staff were afforded the opportunity to speak with current and former WLC students and see firsthand the effectiveness of this innovative curriculum. Their stories and successes were the highlight of the visit, and the DOMA team left inspired and assured that their contributions are making a difference.

It is an honor to be enriching such a passionate body of students through our partnership with Wave Leadership College. We believe our continued support ties right into our own vision for the future and DOMA is proud to be partnering with organizations like WLC as they mentor and educate the leaders of tomorrow.

It will be a challenge, but Vision 2021’s clear outline for each facet of DOMA helps illuminate the way forward. When you know where you’re heading, developing a strategy to get there becomes easier. We have already made strides to make Vision 2021. DOMA has begun overhauling its new Seahawk office space, implementing internal culture initiatives, and exploring novel ways to communicate with and engage our customers.
