The California Consumer Protection Act Goes Into Effect in 2020

Is Your Business Compliant with the CCPA?

The California Consumer Privacy Act is intended to empower consumers by enhancing their privacy rights and protections. This bill affects any for-profit business that collects consumer data who has gross revenues in excess of 25 million, possesses the personal information of 50,000 or more consumers, households or devices, or earns more than half of its annual revenue from selling consumer information. Set to take effect on January 1st, 2020, the CCPA focuses on six important areas of personal data and affords California consumers the right to:

  1. Know what personal data is being collected
  2. Know whether their personal data is sold or disclosed and to what party
  3. Say no to the sale of their personal data
  4. Access their personal data
  5. Request that a business delete/destroy any personal information that is collected from that consumer
  6. Not be discriminated against for exercising their privacy rights
California Consumer Protection Act

What is the CCPA?

“The CCPA is set to be the toughest privacy law in the United States, broadly expanding the rights of consumers, and requiring businesses within scope to be significantly more transparent about how they collect, use, and disclose personal information.”

The Challenges Companies Face

According to research by Help Net Security only 14% of companies are compliant with the CCPA and 44% have not even begun the implementation process. As a result of this bill, tens of thousands of businesses worldwide are scrambling to meet the looming January deadline and get aligned. There are two primary barriers to business. Firstly, creating scalable solutions to meet the needs of regulations like CCPA and GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for businesses. One in five businesses expects to spend more than a million in order to achieve compliance. Secondly, compliance may require a massive procedural overhaul to ensure that consumers can access and request the deletion of their data. It may be necessary to fundamentally change the way an organization both stores and accesses data.

The compliance burden this bill imposes is far-reaching and could have a major impact nationwide. It is being compared to the European Union GDPR in the scope and severity of its requirements. Fortunately, Companies that are already GDPR compliant should find the path a bit easier in reaching CCPA alignment. Experts predict that other states will soon follow California’s example as the demand for better transparency from consumers increases.

Ultimately, it may benefit your organization to begin instituting these policies even if you are not currently subject to the CCPA. As this law takes effect, the rest of the country will be waiting to see how these regulations affect the tech landscape. With data now serving as a digitally minable, financially lucrative resource, there is a worldwide outcry to better protect the originators of that data – consumers.

7 Tips for Transforming Your Town Hall

Build a Thriving Corporate Culture with a Town Hall

Holding a Town Hall can be a powerful tool for unifying your team. Additionally, Town Halls can help employees get aligned with corporate values and as a result, nurture a culture that is invested in your organization’s success. A regular Town Hall meeting offers an opportunity to share the vision for the company as you grow, disseminate important information or polices, and allow employees to ask questions or voice concerns.

Whether you are using Town Hall as a feedback opportunity or as an effective way to get everyone aligned with corporate goals, there is a lot to be gained. In truth, the possibilities are limitless and the event itself can be tailored to fit the needs, interests, and requests of your team. The key is to remember that this should be edifying for your audience- they are the focus of the event. If you’re ready to kick your Town Hall into high gear (and out of boring lecture territory) then consider the following tips for hosting an engaging, and effective Town Hall Meeting:

WHY HOLD A TOWN HALL?

A Town Hall allows you to get a pulse on your organization’s culture. It allows leadership to be visible and to re-enforce culture and values to the team. Sure, it’s great to have a forum for sharing important updates, but at its core, a Town Hall is a chance to inspire collaboration, promote alignment, and build up team morale.

7 Tips for an Effective Town Hall

  1. Incorporate the Senses – Whether it’s including dynamic visuals, energizing music, or offering a filling snack, remember that Town Halls can be about more than listening. Not everyone is an auditory learner, so including video, infographics, and live demonstrations can make a huge difference in what people retain from the event. If people leave feeling the content of your Town Hall could have been better announced via email you’ve missed a great opportunity to get people excited about what you have to share.
  1. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Fun – Start or end your Town Hall with a game or icebreaker like name-that-tune or pop culture trivia. Prizes or giveaways make these activities even more exciting! They don’t have to be expensive, but giveaways of company swag or other fun items are always well received. A great icebreaker can set the tone for the event and capture people’s attention for the later, more informative parts of the session.

How to Infuse Fun into Town Hall

If you’re looking to start incorporating some more dynamic activities into your Town Hall event, consider some of the ideas DOMA has successfully incorporated in the past:

  • Setup a Selfie Station with Frames and Props for after the Event
  • Giveaway T-Shirts or a Fun Branded Product to Everyone who Attends
  • Auction off a Reserved Parking Space for Charity
  • Host an HR Dress Code Fashion Show to show acceptable and unacceptable dress
  • Invite Food Trucks to your Office on Town Hall Day so employees can pick up a delicious lunch before/after the meeting
  1. Honor Your Employees – Speaking of prizes, Town Hall is the perfect time to announce awards like Employee of the Month or offer accolades for a job well done. Celebrating the team as a group should be a Town Hall priority.
  2. Make it Interactive – Consider using a live, interactive presentation software like Mentimeter or Poll Everywhere to allow employees to vote, play trivia games, or ask questions from their mobile devices during the presentation. Results update live in the presentation allowing for immediate feedback from the presenter. People can be shy about speaking up in a crowd but may be more receptive to texting in their questions or concerns. A moderator can screen questions from their device and leadership can address them in real time.
  3. Mix it up – Bring a fresh perspective, theme, or focus to each Town Hall. Don’t be afraid to change the seating arrangement, invite a surprise guest speaker, or try a new presentation format. If you keep people guessing it builds excitement for the next event and ensures there is something for everyone to enjoy.
  4. Get Everyone Involved – Encourage different departments to handle different sections of Town Hall and try to incorporate multiple speakers. Let each department share its own successes, goals, and initiatives. This allows people to enjoy the variety of different perspectives and presentation styles. You can reign in any long-winded participants by including an MC to host or run the event or keeping people to timed blocks.
  5. Don’t Cram in Everything – If you have seven goals for the new year, don’t try to cover them in depth all at once. Let each Town Hall have a central focus or theme and instead get deep into that one topic. Likewise, there is no need to incorporate tons of different games and prizes into one event. If you keep your Town Hall to 45-minutes or less and stay on topic it’s more likely the audience will walk away with a clear picture of what you wanted them to learn.

HOW DOMA DOES TOWN HALL

Town Hall is something we prioritize at DOMA. We use the event as a chance to honor our employees and bring a little bit of fun into the workday, but Town Hall can also be a wonderful litmus test for the success of current culture initiatives.

DOMA’s approach to culture in 2019 is has been to be as inclusive as possible and to make avenues for everyone to participate. This means ensuring that there is a variety of different types of fun, charitable, and personal development activities at different times of day and of different lengths to accommodate everyone’s schedule. For DOMA Town Hall has been a great testing ground for new initiatives and an excellent forum for reciving feedback on what’s working, and where there is an opportunity for growth.

DOMA Opens Second North Carolina Office in Raleigh

Growth, Careers, Tech Sector

This year has seen DOMA creating an abundance of jobs in the technology sector at both the entry and executive level. With a presence in Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina DOMA has its sights on further expansion by 2021. As a part of this growth initiative DOMA is excited to announce that they have opened a new location in Raleigh, North Carolina. With offices in both Charlotte and now Raleigh, DOMA is making a conscious effort to establish hubs in forward-thinking cities and build up leaders from local talent. DOMA wants to promote the Southeast as a new nexus for technology growth and sees Raleigh and Charlotte as fertile ground for the next wave of tech giants.

DOMA Finds a Home at WeWork

To kick-off the new branch, members from DOMA’s Sales, Marketing, and Communication teams took part in an inaugural off-site meeting at Raleigh’s WeWork building. WeWork is a community office space that brings in business large and small from all over Raleigh and will serve as the home-base for DOMA’s Raleigh team. The workspaces incorporate both private offices and open communal areas designed to foster creativity, cross-pollination, and community connection. Transparent glass walls, eclectic furnishings, and playful extras (think free champagne and popsicles) create a warm, welcoming space infused with natural light.

Much like DOMA’s Seahawk headquarters, it’s clear there was a conscious effort to inspire and motivate through design. WeWork’s bustling office space is the perfect incubator for DOMA’s developing Raleigh division. We are excited to see how DOMA can impact the local area and establish itself as a trusted source for Digital, Cloud, and Healthcare Information services.

Finding Inspiration at Glas Neon Design Studio

It wasn’t all work though, the DOMA team took part in a neon glassblowing demonstration and workshop at Glas. As one of only a few neon studios left in the US, Glas represents how true innovators in any industry can remain relevant even when technologies change. Nate Sheaffer, Glas’ founder, has been working with neon for over 30 years. Where once neon was a profitable trade in the United States, now much of the work has been outsourced overseas where logos and street signs can be produced quickly and cheaply. As a result, the loss of large-scale commercial work changed the supply chain for quality materials and required a complete shift in how many neon workers approached their medium. Like many other crafts and trade’s revival came by finding value in deploying neon as a creative outlet and an experience. Glas is a teaching facility, gallery, art factory and personal studio that thrives by re-imagining what neon can be and pushing the boundaries of craft as art.

There are lessons to be learned about adaptability and finding an audience for your services that go beyond the mediums of neon or paper. DOMA helps customers overcome the challenges that come with the increasing obsolescence of paper record keeping. Whether it involves neon signage or paper filing, running a successful business often requires reinvention. For both DOMA and Glas it’s about re-contextualizing challenges as an opportunity to innovate and grow. It’s only fitting for a technology company like DOMA to celebrate the pioneering spirit at Glas.

Insights From the Off-Site

The opportunity for the team to get together and really dig deep into what the future has in store for DOMA was invaluable. The team discussed how to build better synergy between marketing and sales and worked to create a priority map for future growth. The team returned to Virginia Beach from the Raleigh off-site with a renewed vision. In order to compete in a faster and more connected world, companies are re-thinking their workflow and migrating to more effective Cloud solutions like our DOMA DX Software. DOMA is excited to be extending our reach into a dynamic, new region. With our CRO, Anthony Malangone, leading the charge in Raleigh we have the utmost confidence we will reach the goals we have set for Vision 2021.

DOMA Abbreviated Logo

“We see ourselves as a startup backed by 20 years of experience. It seems contradictory to say we are both a new company and an established one; but it’s important to never lose the pioneering energy we had when we began. We like to view every day as ‘Day 1’ and carry that attitude into everything we do. Each day is a new day, and an opportunity to make DOMA better than the day before.”

Get to Know DOMA's Spring Employee of the Quarter (EOQ) - Morgan Banjoman

Culture, DOMA Team, EOQ, Impact, Careers, IT & Development

August is upon and at last it is time to select the Summer Employee of the Quarter (EOQ) at DOMA. It is with great pleasure that DOMA Driven has announced Morgan Banjoman as DOMA’s Summer Employee of the Quarter.

In order to nominate someone for Employee of the Quarter, a fellow employee at DOMA must write to the committee offering examples of how the nominee exemplifies DOMA’s core values of Integrity, Innovation, Fun, and Community. This quarter’s EOQ certainly fits the bill – she is dedicated to both her work and community, inventive, and without a doubt fun. Her nominator had this to say about how Morgan exemplifies fun,

DOMA Abbreviated Logo

“Fun? Who? Morgan? You mean the lady with the funny sunglasses leading the birthday songs? The lady who celebrates everybody? Morgan generates fun wherever she is!”

Marti Jones

COMPLIANCE OFFICER

Morgan’s selection as EOQ has been a long time coming. Before DOMA Culture was relaunched with the three committees -Driven, Gives, and Ignite, there was a single DOMA Culture team. As a long-time member of that DOMA Culture team, Morgan was ineligible to be chosen as Employee of the Quarter. This did not stop other employees from continuously nominating her for the honor. Morgan’s commitment to helping nurture DOMA’s culture far outweighed any desire for accolades. Now that Morgan has moved to the Ignite committee, DOMA Driven is excited to finally see Morgan awarded Employee of the Quarter. Read on to learn a little bit more about Morgan:

How did you feel about being the first person selected as Employee of the Quarter at DOMA?

I feel humbled and proud to receive such an honor.

What made you want to come work at DOMA Technologies?

After researching online and learning that DOMA Technologies assisted our Nation’s Veteran’s, I knew I had to become a part of the team. I have no military background and felt like this was a way for me to pay back all of the people who laid their lives on the line for me.

Did you expect to win this award?

No way! I was so surprised.

How did it feel to be selected at the EOQ?

I was ecstatic! It felt so good to be recognized for going above and beyond my job title to ensure that the work environment is pleasant for everyone. I cried during the ceremony.

What’s your favorite activity to do on break?

I am a walker. I like to take trips around the immediate area getting to meet my step goals. I have joined many FitBit challenges here in the office with co-workers and since I am competitive, I want to be sure to get the win for the week.

Many people have been eager to see Morgan as EOQ and her current nominator captured what sets Morgan apart:

DOMA Abbreviated Logo

“One thing I noticed right away is that doing her best work for DOMA comes first…As the PMR trainer, Morgan considers every new employee’s success her responsibility. She is passionate about her students and it shows.”

Marti Jones

COMPLIANCE OFFICER

Is there someone you believe who deserves to be EOQ? Fall is just around the corner, so we need nominations! Don’t forget, that the Employee of the Quarter will receive a $250 Bonus in your paycheck, a reserved EOQ parking space, a DOMA Swag Bag with premium merchandise, and one administrative day off.  If you work with someone who exemplifies Integrity, Innovation, Fun, and Community take the time to nominate them today.
